Funding call: What is distinctive about student mental health?
If your question remains unanswered having read through this list, please contact us at smarten@kcl.ac.uk
Are applications from non-UK institutions eligible to apply?
Unfortunately, due to funding criteria from UKRI, we are not able to fund non-UK based projects. Applications must be from individuals working within a UK Higher Education Institution or eligible research institution recognised by UKRI.
What is meant by an Early Career Researcher?
The term Early Career Researcher refers to PhD students and researchers in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of research activity following the completion of their PhD. An early career researcher will not have already secured substantive research grant funding.
Am I eligible for funding if I haven’t completed an EdD or PhD?
Yes, PhD and EhD students are eligible to apply and would not be disadvantaged for having not completed their PhD.
Why does the application form ask for thesis submission date?
We ask the date of viva to work out whether the applicant can be classified as an early career researcher.
I have an (unpaid) honorary research contract with a University, am I eligible to be the lead applicant?
This is something you need to discuss with your University. From our perspective, we would willingly consider you as a Principal Investigator with your honorary contract, and arrangements for your pay should be arranged between yourself and your institution.
Is an applicant allowed to lead on more than one application?
Yes, although it is very unlikely that more than one grant will be awarded to a single applicant.
Is it possible to submit two separate applications which relate to one another?
Yes, though bare it mind that if it appears one grant depends on another, the panel may feel the need to fund both or neither; funding both is unlikely.
Are the available funding amounts stated 100% of the funding costs or the 80% you would fund up to?
SMaRteN will only fund 80% of full economic cost (FEC) for successful projects; it will be expected that the other 20% is sourced from elsewhere.
Is there a limit to the number of people involved in a research project?
There is no limit - simply add the requisite number of spaces and names on the application form.
What should be the start date for the proposed project?
The specific project start date is not important, though it should be complete within 12 months (by 25th September 2020); you will receive funding in July 2019. Successful applications will have set out objectives for a research project that can realistically be completed within 12 months, and ideally contribute to a larger portfolio of research in the longer term.
Where is the funding coming from?
The funding money itself is from UKRI, but will be distributed by King's College London (where SMaRteN are based).
Should travel costs be included in the funding application?
Travel costs should be included if you feel you will need them to be covered by the grant - SMaRteN will not be able to reimburse travel costs in addition to any funding given.
Should references in the application be included in the word count?
References can be included at the end of your application and are not included in the word count.
Is it acceptable to include incentives for participation in research in a funding application (such as a prize draw/gift vouchers)?
Yes, these can be included in funding.
Are PhD students included in research about Student Mental Health?
Yes, we are interested in research on the mental health of undergraduates through to PhD students.
