Tomorrow’s University: the future of student mental health & wellbeing - Mental Health Question Time panel event

On the 24th January, we were delighted to co-host this event as part of the Mental Health Question Time series. The series is a partnership between the UCL Division of Psychiatry, The Lancet Psychiatry and the National Elf Service .

Mental Health Question Time is a series of regular free to attend public discussions that take place in London and online. Our aim is to bring together patients, service users, carers, health and social care professionals, researchers, policy makers, commissioners, politicians, journalists and others, to talk about important mental health topics.

This is timely topic for the start of the year and featured a a panel of expert speakers who provided insight on realistic measures universities can implement, based on their own experiences, research, and evidence-based practice.

This event has now taken place, but the hour long session was recorded and you can catch up online.

Event Overview
Going to university represents a major transition—and potentially a major challenge—in young people’s lives. Over the past few years it has increasingly been reported that university students are struggling with their mental health. However, research in this area is still in its infancy, so it is difficult to fully understand the scale of this issue and how to tackle it. Furthermore, institutions are struggling to offer adequate support, despite students being a population that is potentially easy for services to reach.
After a year of remote learning and a great deal of uncertainty over the coming months, how can we take meaningful steps towards improving students’ mental health and wellbeing?

Sign up now for this free hour-long online event to discuss the future of student mental health and wellbeing.

Chair
  • Tayla McCloud, PhD Student, Department of Psychiatry, University College London

Tayla is a researcher we funded as part of our second funding call, to undertake 'An evaluation of a study groups social intervention to support the mental health and wellbeing of MSc students'.

The SPEQS Toolkit is part of the Mentally Healthy Universities Movement and aligns with the Stepchange: Mentally Healthy Universities, University Mental Health Charter, and NHS Long Term Plan. This work is part of a wider Office for Students-funded Student Mental Health Partnerships project and in collaboration with Universities UK, Student Minds and NHS England.

Alongside this research, she has contributed to a variety of SMaRteN events and also runs the website 'Improving the Student Experience in Higher Education'. This website pulls together information, guidance, support and practical advice in the undergraduate and postgraduate taught areas to assist managers, academics and members of the professional service teams within universities who are responsible for improving the student experience across the entire student lifecycle. Colleagues can contribute to the site by visiting the website and case study contribution pages.
