Webinar: “Pathways to success: supporting good transitions into university”

On 28th October we held a webinar on supporting student mental health through the transition to university.

Our fantastic panel were Michelle Morgan (University of East London), Kelly Norwood (Ulster University), Margaret McLafferty (Ulster University), Daria Gralewska (Ulster University), and Aja Murray (University of Edinburgh)
The session included each panellist giving an overview of their activity, with projects including a mixture of research work, data analysis, and interventions currently running at UK universities.
This was followed by a panel discussion and opportunity to ask questions. This will be chaired by our very own Alyson Dodd from SMaRteN.

Please check back for a recording of the session and further information about future activity related to the projects.

Event Overview

Panellists
Michelle Morgan, Dean of Students at the University of East London.

Michelle will be talking about transitions and using findings from the Pre-arrival academic questionnaire that looks at prior learning experiences and expectations on entry, to help shape pre-entry and orientation and induction to study.
Margaret McLafferty, Research Fellow who led the SMaRteN-funded 'Pilot study of a student-led peer support well-being programme.'
She is joined by:
Kelly Norwood, Lecturer in Psychology and Academic Lead for the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) scheme
Daria Gralewska, a student who helped facilitate their project.

Discussing their work on the pilot study of student-led peer support wellbeing sessions embedded in the established PASS programme at Ulster University. PASS aids the first-year transition into university whereby higher year students (mentors) facilitate study sessions with first year students (mentees). In the pilot study wellbeing sessions were introduced in the second semester.
Aja Murray, a Lecturer in Psychology with expertise on the developmental aspects of mental health.

Aja will give us an overview of what secondary data analysis can tell us about the transition to university.
